You do not have to choose between a cushion that feels good and a cushion whose materials you can verify. A seat cushion's feel is not one material doing all the work. It is a recipe of three layers that combine: a support core that sets the depth of the ride, a comfort layer that governs how fast the cushion responds, and a batting wrap that sets what your hand feels first. This is not latex against foam, or foam against wool. Cushion-fill guides that stop at "foam, feathers, or springs" treat fills as rivals, three separate cushions competing for your vote. They are not rivals but layers that stack, each doing a different mechanical job, and the feel you get is the sum of the three working together.
What Do Sink, Float, Recovery, and Crown Actually Mean?
One of the most recognized luxury sofa brands in the country sells a sectional for more than nine thousand dollars. Owners report that the cushions compress fully during a single sitting and need daily fluffing to hold their shape. Nothing on that sofa's spec sheet told a buyer what was supposed to hold the shape in the first place. A 4,308-review study of premium furniture found that the gap between what a piece promises and what it delivers is the single biggest driver of negative reviews. Buyers are surprised because nothing let them predict the outcome.
Every showroom adjective, plush, firm, sink-in, breaks down into four mechanical behaviors. Sink is how far you settle before the seat pushes back. Float is the buoyant sensation you feel as a cushion pushes back against your weight instead of just giving way. Recovery is how fast the cushion returns to shape when you shift or stand: fast recovery reads buoyant and tailored, slow recovery reads enveloping and casual. Crown is the domed loft a cushion holds when nobody is sitting on it, which is most of the hours it spends in your living room. A cushion that cannot hold its crown is a cushion you will be fluffing daily.
These four behaviors are not vague impressions but properties you can trace back to a specific layer and a specific material choice. None of these three materials work alone, and none of them is a rival to the others. They are layers that combine, and the ratio between them is what moves the feel from one end of the spectrum to the other. More latex over a firmer support core reads buoyant and responsive. A deeper support core wrapped in a thicker wool batting reads structured, with a soft surface hand over a firm base. Neither combination is more correct than the other. You may have been told, usually by a salesperson standing in front of a conventional sofa, that holding a materials bar means accepting one firm, worthy-feeling cushion and nothing else.
